Frankie Fredericks is the only athlete from Namibia to win an Olympic medal. His career is a perfect opportunity on how to use your talent in sports.
When it came to athletics, he specialised in the 100 and 200 meters events. He competed against the likes of Michael Johnson and Donovan Bailey. In the early 90’s, he was the shinning light for young athletes looking to get involved in athletics.
Young athletes always get this wrong, they believe that opportunity only comes to the lucky and that when you’re from certain parts of the world, you can’t access those opportunities. Thats why i started this series on african legends in sports who have achieved great things.
Last week we looked at George Weah and the week before that we looked at Haile Gebrsellasie. In sports the one advantage you might have is your talent and its up to you to use that talent to gain opportunity in sports.
Frankie Fredericks did that to perfection. He didn’t say because he was less privileged or because Namibia was under South African rule. He kept racing in school competitions until he got noticed and got a scholarship to school abroad.
How to use your talent in sports means you understand what you must do to get what you want.
This episode of Athlete Maestro shares three lessons you can learn from the career of Frankie Fredericks.
Remember, knowing is not enough you must apply, willing is not enough you must do.
